On a computer, About Google Chrome checks the installed browser. Finish a pending relaunch before treating an open window as an updated browser.
Find the update state
Google’s desktop instructions start in More → Help → About Google Chrome. Use that screen to check for an available update and follow the Relaunch action when offered. Background downloading and running the new version are separate steps.
Before starting, save work in forms and other pages whose state may not survive a restart. This is a precaution in our checklist, not a claim that we have tested every web application’s session recovery.
Separate “pending” from “unsupported”
Google notes that an update requires a supported operating system and the relevant system requirements. A missing Relaunch option is not a reason by itself to uninstall the browser; read the status on the About screen first.
Our suggested diagnostic record contains the operating system, Chrome version, exact status text and whether a relaunch finished. That makes a follow-up question more precise than “Chrome is broken.” Never post passwords, cookies or a full browsing history with it.
Know what this check does not establish
A successful update check concerns this installation. It does not prove that an extension, organization policy or website is compatible. If the device is managed, preserve the displayed management message when consulting the administrator.
This guide summarizes Google’s computer workflow. Phone menus and managed deployment tools can differ. We have not run a security audit of your device, and this page does not diagnose a vulnerability from the appearance of an update icon.
